250th Celebration — Semiquincentennial

Hear ye!“  Hear ye, one and all!

To Hillsborough businesses, residents, schools, committees and interested parties:

Something Big is Coming Up!

In two years, Hillsborough will observe a big birthday. The year 2022 will be the 250th anniversary of the incorporation of our town in 1772. This definitely calls for a town-wide celebration, and it’s time to start planning.

We’ve had them before, but never like this one will be. This is a major town anniversary – we could call it the Semiquincentennial or the Sestercentennial, but whatever we call it – it marks 250 years.

The town, with help from the Hillsborough Historical Society (HHS), would like to plan a series of events and celebrations, complete with decorations, memorabilia and souvenirs, perhaps a parade and a pageant of our early days. It’s our chance to showcase everything our historic community has to offer. Everything from 1772, when a few bold men swung axes in one of the most northerly N.H. settlements, until today, when we’re nearly 6,000 strong.

To pull this off, we need your help.

Whatever your age or how long you’ve lived here, all your ideas and recollections are welcome. The HHS is already brainstorming. How can your business or club participate? “ Could you write a play about life here in the earliest days of our republic? Could you organize a band or parade? Have you active neighbors? Could they pitch in? Does your child need community service hours for school? “ Have you enjoyed things in other towns that could be included here? The possibilities are endless!

The town will be holding a planning meeting (using masks and social distancing)“  to get started.“  We can ALL use something to look forward to these days, so make a list of ideas, and watch for more information.

 

 

Heritage Museum

Space and Accessibility

Here at the Hillsborough Historical Society, we are pleased to announce that the project to improve accessibility to the second floor of the old firehouse is moving forward.“  Having been proposed several years ago, the town recently contacted us to arrange for construction to begin.

This is exciting because our space on the first floor is fully utilized for the display of our rotating exhibits, leaving little room for meetings, gatherings and presentations.“  With the start of the elevator project, we are looking at ways to use the area on the second floor (currently non-public storage) for some of these purposes.“  Without a lift to provide access to persons with mobility challenges, this had not previously been possible.

Please note that due to a combination of COVID 19 restrictions and construction for the elevator we anticipate the museum being closed through July.“  “ Photos from the Manahan-Phelps-McCulloch Collection can still be ordered by contacting Gil Shattuck at (603)464-3850.

Check back soon and watch as the Society’s ‘Space Committee’ develops plans for improving the visitor experience!

Living History Event

History, Alive!

The production known as the Living History Event (LHE), NH had a good run and finished its 10th and final year in 2018.

Fans of the event will be pleased to know that information about its successor, “History Alive!”. “ This new event will feature two of the primary focus areas from the former LHE, the Jones Road Encampment Reenactors and the Historic Hillsborough Center.“  Many hours of effort have gone into elaborating on the Hillsborough Center events, and can be found at HistoryAliveNH.org.

History Alive NH is an independently operated trade-name of the Hillsborough Historical Society.“  We share a common interest in our local heritage and wish them the very best!
